According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association, glass backsplashes are beginning to reign in popularity over ceramic tile backsplashes, which are in decline. Here’s what the NKBA reported about the trend in their press release on the Top Kitchen and Bath Trends for 2012.
“Although glass remains a niche material for kitchen countertops, it’s been recently used by more than half of kitchen designers as a backsplash material, rising from 41% [of kitchen designers] a year ago to 52% now. This trails only natural stone tile at 60% . . .”
Other materials gaining prominence as an option for backsplashes are granite (30%) and quartz (20%) due to their common application as countertops. Complementing granite or quartz countertops with a matching backsplash has become an increasingly popular trend.
